Lady Clippers defeat Milledgeville twice in a week

AMBOY — Amboy’s varsity softball team managed to overcome a late Milledgeville rally to down the Lady Missiles, 9-8, on May 2 at the AHS field.

The Lady Clippers led 8-3 entering the sixth inning when Milledgeville scored five runs to tie the game. Amboy responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to take the lead and then held Milledgeville scoreless in the seventh.

Ellie McLaughlin had two singles for the Lady Clippers, while Kiera Karlson, Tyrah Vaessen and Payton Payne had one hit apiece.

Alyvia Whelchel was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits.

The two teams met again on May 4 in Milledgeville and Amboy escaped with a 16-14 victory.

Amboy trailed 10-7 after three innings, but forged in front with seven runs in the fourth to take a 14-10 lead. Milledgeville climbed to within a run with three tallies in the fifth, but the Lady Clippers put two on the board in the seventh and then the home team got just one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Karlson picked up a single and a triple for the winners, while Vaessen added a pair of singles. Collecting one hit were McLaughlin, Payne, Whelchel, Jersey Thomas and Haleigh Stenzel.

Whelchel was back in the circle and got the victory.
