Lady Clippers climb to 15-1 record

AMBOY — After the busy week of the Amboy Holiday Tournament, the Amboy basketball team faced another week of three games.

Amboy played Somonauk, who it beat in the tournament championship, on Jan. 3. The Lady Clippers did not get off to a good start in the rematch, but Amboy fought back and played a better second half to win 33-18.

Addison Pertell led the Amboy attack with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Meave Larson shot 3-of-5 from the field for six points and grabbed three rebounds, while Emily Sachs scored six points on 3-of-6 shooting and had four rebounds.

The next night, the Lady Clippers journeyed to Polo for their second Northwest Upstate Illini South Conference game of the season.

Amboy (15-1, 2-0 NIU South) played well, but Polo made a run late in the third quarter and early fourth quarter.

The Lady Clippers hit two quick three-point baskets in the fourth and iced the game with free throws for a 50-37 conference victory.

Elly Jones scored a career-high 25 points while dishing out four assists and recording four steals. Although the Polo defense played Jones aggressively, her four 3-pointers and free throws down the stretch were a defining factor in the Amboy victory.

Pertell scored 11 points for the second straight game to add to her four rebounds and four steals. Larson collected a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. Tyrah Vaessen finished the game with five points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Amboy participated in the Eastland Shootout on Saturday, Jan. 7 as it took on Freeport Aquin.

The Lady Clippers’ defense was solid and helped win the game 32-21.

Pertell led the team with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Jones had seven points and three assists. Courtney Ortgiesen recorded a team-high eight rebounds, while scoring six points and snagging four steals.

After a conference game at Milledgeville on Tuesday, the Lady Clippers are in action at 6 p.m. Thursday against Ashton-Franklin Center in Amboy.
