Francis “Frank” Joseph Mekeel

AMBOY — Francis “Frank” Joseph Mekeel, 68, of Amboy, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, with his loving wife, Kathy, by his side.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1953 in Amboy, the son of Arthur “Joe” and Margaret (Merlo) Mekeel. He married the love of his life, Kathleen “Kathy” Hochstatter on July 31, 1981 at St. Patrick’s Church in Amboy.

Frank spent the majority of his life working in the lumber business. He started his early years working at Patterson Lumber in Franklin Grove. Then, from 1990 to 2017, he was co-owner of Dixon Builders Supply with Bob Dimmig. After his retirement, he enjoyed working at Home Depot in Peru and then at Jones Berry Lumber in Amboy. Frank enjoyed his time working on the Amboy City Council. He was an alderman from 2001-2007, and was the Amboy City Mayor from 2007-2013.

Together, Frank and Kathy have two daughters, Ashley (Keith Leffelman) and Jennifer (Dustin Seeley), and four grandchildren, Genevieve, Deacon, Abram, and Marlow Seeley. He is also survived by his siblings, Kathy (Steve) Gardner, of Amboy, Don (Diane) Mekeel, of Sterling, Mary (Roland) Derksen, of Zeeland, Mich., John Mekeel, of Dixon, Theresa Mekeel, of Dixon, Patrick (Brigette) Mekeel, of Sterling, Mike Mekeel, of Somerset, Penn., Tommy Mekeel, of Dixon; his aunt, Ann Rios, of Freeport; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Paul Mekeel, his aunt, Lena Merlo, and aunt, Alice Finn.

Frank was a volunteer firefighter in Franklin Grove in the early 1980s, a member of the Elks Club in Dixon, and a member of St. Patrick’s Church.

Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Amboy on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. and from 9:30 -10:30 a.m., on Monday, Nov. 14. The rosary will be said from 3-3:30 p.m., on Sunday in the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 14 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Amboy.
