AMBOY — At approximately 8:13 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, the Amboy Police Department arrested 33-year-old Fabra A. Coy, of Sterling, for driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Officers investigated a single vehicle accident at Veteran's Park in Amboy. Amboy Police Chief Jeff Blake stated that preliminary investigation revealed that Coy was operating a 2003 Ford Expedition that left the roadway on South East Avenue. The vehicle then traveled east across the sidewalk and came to rest after slamming into one of the support pillars of the shelter.
Blake stated that major structural damage was caused to the shelter, park benches, decorative rocks and flag pole. No injuries were reported.
Amboy Mayor John Schamberger, a veteran himself, assessed the damage after the accident along with the help of Amboy City Alderman Eric McLaughlin.
"Veterans Park is an important landmark in our community. Countless hours have been put into the park by volunteers and veterans. The park and shelter will be repaired and restored as soon as possible,” Shamberger said.
