Clippers suffer non-conference loss

AMBOY — The Amboy Clippers suffered a 13-1 non-conference loss at Newark in a game halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Newark nearly batted around twice in the second inning and plated 12 runs.

Amboy avoided the shutout with a run in the fourth an RBI single off the bat of Calvin Seier.

Andruw Jones banged out two doubles for the Clippers.

Ian Eller was the losing pitcher.

Amboy hosted conference foe Milledgeville in the regular season finale on June 1 and the Clippers claimed a wild 15-14 come-from-behind victory.

The Missiles sprinted out to an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings before the Clippers began their comeback. Amboy scored three runs in the bottom of the third and then sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth and nine of them scored to push the Clippers into a 12-8 lead.

The game eventually became tied as 14-all heading to the bottom of the seventh when Amboy scored the game-winner off of three walks and an error.

Jackson Rogers paced the Clippers with three hits and three runs batted in, while Preston Henkel and Jairon Hochstatter each drove in two runs. Eller, Joe Ackert and Ethan Larson recorded one RBI apiece.

Tucker Lindenmeyer pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief to pick up the win.

The Clippers dropped a 13-3 decision to Fulton in the opening round of the Class 1A Regional on June 4 at Fulton. The Steamers closed out the game via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth.

Jones doubled and Lindenmeyer singled for Amboy’s only hits.

Eller started on the mound for the Clippers and took the loss.

Amboy finished the season with a 4-9 overall record and a 4-6 conference mark.
