AMBOY – The Amboy Clipper varsity boys’ basketball team split a pair of home games last week.
The Clippers used a second-half surge to roll over Durand, 60-42, on Dec. 11 at the AHS gym.
The game was tight in the first half, with Durand owning a two-point lead after the first period and Amboy taking a two-point margin to intermission. The tide turned in a big way in the third quarter as the Clippers pumped in 25 points in the frame and held Durand to just nine.
Sophomore Preston Henkel sparked the third-quarter uprising as he poured in 11 of his game-high 20 points in the stanza. Hunter Zimmerly was next on the scoring chart for Amboy with 12 points, followed by Logan Whelchel with nine and Mitchell McLaughlin with eight.

Ashton-Franklin Center torched the nets in the first half and went on for a 69-57 triumph over the Clippers on Dec. 13 at the AHS gym.
The Raiders had the three-ball working in the first half as they fired in four treys in the opening period to move out to a 24-11 lead at the horn. A-FC added two more trifectas in the second quarter to take a 42-26 halftime lead.
Zimmerly carried the hot hand for the Clippers with 25 points to lead all scorers. He hit three field goals from beyond the arc. McLaughlin (15) and Henkel (13) also hit double digits for Amboy.
A-FC had a balanced attack, led by Sawyer Murphy with 21 points. Ethan Drew was next with 16 tallies, while Jesus Aguilar supplied 12 markers.
