OREGON – The Amboy High School cross country teams competed against Oregon and Winnebago on Sept. 22 at Oregon.
The Clipper boys captured the team title win with 35 points. Oregon was next with 44 points and Winnebago tallied 45.
Amboy had the top two runners in the race and four of the top eight. Brock Loftus led the charge with an overall winning time of 18:05. Coming in a close second was teammate Ian Eller in 18:19. The next two AHS competitors through the chute were Wyatt Lundquist (6th place, 20:23) and Andruw Jones (8th place, 20:28). Rounding out the Clipper team were Garrett Pertell (21st place, 22:55) and Calvin Deering (24th place, 24:18).
“Another 1A meet and another win for the boys,” said Amboy coach Mike Robinson. “We are 5-0 against 1A teams this year.
“It wasn’t without challenges. Wyatt and Andruw both held off someone in the last couple meters to come in sixth and eighth, respectively. Without that it could have been a different story.”
The girls finished third in the triangular with 69 points. The state’s top-ranked Winnebago squad took first with 15 points and Oregon scored 55. Winnebago had the top six runners in the race.
Lauren Althaus was first in among Lady Clipper competitors in seventh place with a time of 22:44. Next was Elly Jones in 13th with a time of 23:55, followed by Madelyn McLaughlin in 19th with a time of 25:40. Also running for AHS were Brooklyn Whelchel (24th place, 28:03), Brittney Mundell (25th place, 28:04) and Bailey Crouch (28th place, 28:32).
“The girls were challenged to go out and run their own races and they did just that,” stated Robinson. “We had a little fun around the two-mile mark and got some quick smiles and laughs, and then back to work. I was glad to see the girls work hard.”
