AMBOY – Last year’s Class 1A state champion Lena-Winslow proved it has strength again this year after a 72-37 win over Amboy-LaMoille in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference action on Sept. 28 at the AHS field.

The Clippers actually scored first when Mario Carvahol booted a 25-yard field goal midway through the first quarter for a 3-0 lead.

But Lena-Winslow exploded for four touchdowns over a five-minute span to zoom out to a 28-3 lead. The Panthers tallied on runs of 50 and 40 yards, a 29-yard pass and a 48-yard interception return.

Amboy-LaMoille halted the L-W scoring streak with four seconds left in the first period on a Mitchell McLaughlin 48-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Winn. Carvahol converted the extra-point kick.

Lena-Winslow continued its assault in the second quarter with four more touchdowns. The Panthers had TD runs of 4, 53 and 64 yards, while they added a 28-yard touchdown pass right before intermission.

The Clippers tacked on an 8-yard touchdown connection from McLaughlin to Logan Whelchel, followed by a Carvahol PAT kick. A-L trailed 58-17 at the break.

Each team scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. McLaughlin hit Winn for a 10-yard TD strike and Austin Norman found the end zone on a 17-yard run. Carvahol was successful on both extra-point kicks.

Lena-Winslow’s third-quarter scores came on 30- and 73-yard runs.

Amboy-LaMoille put the only points on the board in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown scamper by McLaughlin. The PAT kick was blocked.

McLaughlin completed 18 of 37 passes for 267 yards, while Norman ran 19 times for 111 yards.

The Clippers (2-4 overall, 2-3 conference) will have another stern test this week when they travel to Dakota (5-1) on Friday, Oct. 5.
