Clippers face opponents on court


AMBOY — Forreston posted a 41-35 win over Amboy in varsity boys’ basketball action on Jan. 11 at the AHS gym.

Amboy fell behind 9-4 after the first quarter, but managed to tie the score at 14-all heading to intermission. The Cardinals pumped in three shots from three-point range in the third period and were able to open up a 25-20 lead entering the fourth frame. The Clippers heated up with 15 fourth-quarter points, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Forreston.

Eddie Jones connected on three shots from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 20 points for the Clippers. Teammate Wes Wilson checked in with seven markers.

Ashton-Franklin Center’s fast start was too much for the Clippers to handle in a 63-47 setback to the Raiders on Jan. 13 at Ashton.

AFC sprinted out to a 20-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The count was 33-19 at the break and 42-33 after three frames.

Jones provided most of the offense for the Clippers, pumping in 22 points. He connected on eight of nine free throws. Troy Anderson helped out with 11 markers, while Wilson added nine tallies.

The Clippers hosted Stockton on Jan. 14 and the Blackhawks left town with a 49-34 victory.

Amboy went to the locker room at halftime with a 22-21 lead, but saw that slim margin disappear in the third quarter as it scored only one point compared to 12 for Stockton.

Anderson led the scoring chart for the Clippers with 19 points, followed by Kyler McNinch with six and Jones with five.

The Amboy boys basketball team had two road games lwith a home game squeezed in the middle.

Although they battled and played until the final buzzer of all three games, the Clippers went 0-3 on the week.

The week’s action started with a trip to Lanark on Tuesday, Jan. 3 where the Clippers fell to Eastland 61-36. 

Sophomore guard Eddie Jones led the scoring as he made three 3-point baskets for 11 points, while junior Troy Anderson added 10 points in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference game. 

The next contest was a home game for Amboy as it hosted non-conference foe Fulton on Thursday, Jan. 5. The Steamers won 54-11 as the Clippers trailed 12-4 after the first quarter, 28-4 at halftime, and 48-6 after three frames.

Amboy’s scoring came from senior Garrett Pertell (four), sophomore Tyler Higgins (three), Jones (two), and sophomore Kabe Daniels (two).

The third and final game of the week was Friday, Jan. 6 in Earlville.

Amboy fell short 43-31 in the non-conference game, but saw strong showings from Jones, who led the team with 17 points as he made two 3s, and Anderson, who also drained two 3s to finish with 14 points.
