Clippers end 2018 season with loss to Forreston

AMBOY – Amboy-LaMoille put the 2018 season in the books after a 62-34 loss to Forreston in NUIC-Northwest varsity football action on Oct. 19 at the AHS field.

The two teams combined for 44 first-quarter points. Unfortunately for the Clippers, Forreston scored 30 of them.

The Cardinals tallied the first two touchdowns of the contest on runs of 13 and 4 yards.

The Clippers got on the board when Mitchell McLaughlin barreled into the end zone from 9 yards out followed by a Mario Carvahol extra-point kick to make it 14-7.

Amboy-LaMoille had a special teams breakdown on the ensuing kickoff when Forreston’s Evan Kelsey took it back 79 yards for a touchdown, and the Cardinals followed that up with a 7-yard TD run to make it a 30-7 score.

The Clippers completed the first-quarter scoring barrage with a 27-yard touchdown strike from McLaughlin to Marcus Winn.

Forreston’s offensive onslaught continued in the second period when it tallied touchdowns on runs of 40, 40, 1 and 43 yards. The Cardinals were successful on all four two-point attempts.

Amboy-LaMoille put up one touchdown in the quarter when McLaughlin found Preston Henkel on a 38-yard touchdown toss.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, which began with a running clock because of the 40-point deficit.

The Clippers completed the scoring with a pair of TDs in the fourth frame on a 2-yard run by Austin Norman and a 6-yard run by McLaughlin. Carvahol added a pair of extra-point kicks.

There were 822 total yards gained in the contest, with the Clippers picking up 369. McLaughlin completed 13 of 32 passes for 283 yards. His favorite target was Winn, who had eight receptions for 168 yards. McLaughlin also led the Clippers in rushing with 33 yards on six carries.

Amboy-LaMoille closed out the season at 3-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
