VARNA – The Amboy Clippers had a quick start and then held off Midland for a 78-67 victory in varsity boys’ basketball action on Jan. 5 at Varna.
The Clippers zoomed out to a 25-8 first-quarter lead as Mitchell McLaughlin torched the net for 14 points. Amboy cooled off in the second period, but still owned a 33-24 halftime lead. Midland cut the margin to five (53-48) heading to the fourth frame where the Clippers outscored the home team, 25-19, to preserve the win.
McLaughlin finished with a game-high 26 points for the Clippers. Hunter Zimmerly was next for Amboy with 19 points, while Logan Whelchel dropped in 12 tallies. Preston Henkel and Trevor Vaessen contributed eight and seven points, respectively.
