Charlotte V. Brainerd, 96, of Dixon, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017. She was a registered nurse at Dixon Developmental Center in Dixon prior to her retirement.

DIXON — Charlotte V. Brainerd, 96, of Dixon, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017. She was a registered nurse at Dixon Developmental Center in Dixon prior to her retirement.

Visitation will be held 3 - 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Dixon. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday at the church, with Rev. Bunyan Cocar, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon.

Mrs. Brainerd was born on Feb. 28, 1920, in Harmon, the daughter of William Riley and Sarah Elizabeth (Burgess) Hensen. Charlotte was a graduate of Dixon High Class of 1938. She married Charles Brainerd on June 24, 1939, in Dixon. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1993.  Charlotte met her significant other, Wilhelm “Willie” Gassner, on Jan. 2, 2002 at the Senior Center. Charlotte was a member of First Baptist Church in Dixon for 91 years; was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, a member of the KSB Hospital Auxiliary Board; also was an assistant chaplain at KSB for many years. After retiring from KSB Auxiliary Board, they made her an honorary member in 2016. She was a Pink Lady for KSB Hospital, a volunteer for the Free Clinic, and a Lee County election judge, for many years. For several years, she and Charles enjoyed ball room dancing at the Loveland Community Building, performing in many competitions.

Charlotte is survived by two sons, Charles Lewis Brainerd, Jr., of Dixon, Robert Michael (Dreama) Brainerd, of Dixon; four daughters, Cheryl Lynn (Dale) Weinreich, of Cherry Valley, Marilyn (Chester) Warzynski, of Boston, Mass., Rhonda Pierce, of Rockford, Judith K. (Dennis) Friel, of Dixon; 36 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters; five brothers; and one grandson, Riley Brainerd.

Visitation will be held 3 - 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Dixon. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday at the church, with Rev. Bunyan Cocar, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to First Baptist Church, Dixon.
