Boys team, Vaessen qualify for cross country sectional meet

ROCK FALLS – The Amboy-LaMoille boys’ cross country team extended its season by at least another week after participating in the Rock Falls Class 1A Cross Country Regional on Oct. 20.

The Clippers finished fifth in the team standings with 131 points to earn a berth in the Oregon Sectional. The top seven teams in the regional advance to the next round.

Amboy-LaMoille was led by senior Thomas Stamberger, who finished 12thoverall with a time of 16:44. Brock Loftus was next through the chute for the Clippers in 14thplace with a time of 16:50. The rest of the Clipper lineup consisted of Ian Eller (32nd, 17:45), Mateo Ramis (42nd, 18:16), Calvin Deering (54th, 18:54) and Andruw Jones (88th, 20:42).

Spencer Mauch of Sterling Newman claimed the individual championship with a clocking of 15:29.

Rock Falls won the team title with 68 points. The next three teams were Sterling Newman (74), Prophetstown (99) and Rock Island Alleman (101). Orion (133) and Galva (175) also qualified their teams.

In the girls’ race, Lady Clipper Margaret Vaessen advanced to the sectional after finishing eighth in the regional with a time of 19:51. Teammates Kelynn Boyle (23rd, 21:49), Kaitlyn Ortgiesen (35th, 22:47) and Bailey Bickett (64th, 25:23) fell short of qualifying for the next round.

Karlie Hey of Sterling Newman was the individual champion with a time of 17:51.

Rock Falls’ girls matched the boys by winning the team championship with 18 points. Other teams moving on to the sectional include Kewanee Wethersfield (67), Orion (118), Sherrard (152), Bureau Valley (158), Prophetstown (166) and Rockridge (166).

The sectional qualifiers will participate in the Oregon Sectional on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Oregon Park West. The girls will race at 10 a.m. and the boys will compete at 11.
