AMBOY – The Amboy District 272 Board of Education held their regular meeting on Oct. 19. During the meeting, reports were given by the district’s three school principals.

Amboy High School Principal Janet Crownhart congratulated Dana Merriman, who was named Student of the Month for October.

Curriculum and School Improvement

• On the Oct. 18 School Improvement day, AHS teachers met to discuss the final chapter of the book study, “Significant 72.” In addition, Lee County and the Amboy Police Department were on site to hold the annual Law Enforcement Training with staff.

• Oct. 1, Crownhart attended a virtual conference on the “Power of Positive Leadership.”

• Oct. 7, Mrs. Bulfer attended a virtual conference on “Improving Mental Health” for staff and students.

School Activities

• AHS held senior night for golf, cross country, football, cheer, band and flags on the last home night of their seasons.

• Picture retakes were on Oct. 1.

• On the morning of Oct. 18, AHS held a college and career fair for students in grades 5-12 with over 45 vendors at the event. All junior high and high school students were able to attend.

• P.R.I.D.E Awards were given to individuals who went above and beyond the expectations of high school students.

• AHS gave the PSAT 9 to freshmen on Sept. 28 and the PSAT/NMSQT to sophomores and juniors on Oct. 13.

Building Activities

• A fire drill was held Sept. 29.

• Crownhart said with the new gym now open, AHS held their first volleyball game there on Oct. 7.

• Crownhart thanked the Sunshine cart for bringing goodies on Oct. 12.

Curriculum and School Improvement

• On Oct. 6, the SIP team met with Anji Garza from the Regional Office of Education to discuss goals, math implementation, bridges training, department and grade level meetings, PBIS, RtI, career fair, data wall, and special education.

• On Oct. 13, grade levels met to discuss students, data, and plans for PBIS day.

PBIS

• On Oct. 18, AJHS held their PBIS assembly and gave the following awards:

5th Grade- Parker Zimmerly and Hannah Shoemaker

6th Grade- Abel Valdez and Tyler Mahar 

7th Grade- Henry Nichols and Morgan Kreiser

8th Grade- Stephanie Nave and Matthew Farrar

P.E.- Tucker McCoy and Ethan Lewis

Clipper P.R.I.D.E.- Olivia Ketchum, Mallory Bodmer, Erika Decker, Peyton Payne, Janella Gallagher, Landon Jackson, Ella Noble, Alexa McKendry, Callan Christoffersen, Bella Yanos, Stephanie Nave, Addison Blaine, Xavier Cheever, Amylia Bump, Austin McLaughlin, Anthony Sus, Lexi Davis, Landon Carter, Elizia Preston, Oliver Jones, Hayden Thomas, Samantha Nauman, and Tanner Welch.

Also during the assembly, Benchmarking Awards were announced and extra-curricular activities and clubs were recognized.

School Activities

• About 50 students signed up to play 5th-8th grade basketball. Coaches are Anthony Wells, Chris Payne and Trese McNinch. 

• Speech Team started with three students signed up. The team is coached by Yvonne Vicks.

• Kelly Foster and Faith Sachs are coaching 7th and 8th grade cheerleading.

• On Oct. 18, junior high students attended a job/career fair that was organized by the high school. Students were able to visit booths and hear about careers or college, then do a small write up.

• On Sept. 29, Amboy Junior High held their first fire drill in conjunction with the high school.

• On Sept. 28, the Regional Office of Education did health/life safety inspections at the schools.

School Improvement/Professional Development

• Parent Teacher Conferences were held Oct. 21 and 22. Parents had the option of virtual or in person attendance.

• Kindergarten teachers uploaded the KIDS assessments.

• Teachers and paraprofessionals worked on mandated trainings.

• Staff participated in a Law Enforcement Drill on Oct. 18.

• The school wide Problem Solving team met Oct. 14 with each grade level discussing teacher concerns.

PBIS

• Central School held their first quarter celebration in classrooms on Oct. 21. The PBIS team organized five different rotations for students to go through after lunch. Fall classroom parties were also held that day.

School Activities

• Picture retakes were done on Oct. 12.

• Schamberger thanked Jim Travi and the Amboy Lions Club for their generous donation of pumpkins. The fourth grade students were able to draw on their pumpkins, which were then displayed for all to enjoy. She also thanked Rick Cardot for his pumpkin donation for the preschool and kindergarten students.

• The YWCA gave a presentation on Body Safety to the preschool class on Oct. 20.

• Schamberger said the “Donuts with Dad” event was very successful and thanked everyone who attended.

PERSONNEL

Following closed session, the board accepted a verbal resignation from Cindy Mundell as assistant head cook at Amboy Junior High, effective Sept. 24.

They approved hiring Whitney Miller as a counselor at Amboy High School, effective Nov. 1; Trese McNinch as 8th grade boys basketball coach for the 2021-22 school year; and Anthony Wells as 5th and 6th grade boys basketball coach for the 2021-22 school year.

Please note, beginning in November, board meetings will take place at Amboy High School. The next regular board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at AHS. All meetings are open to the public.
