Angel Xavier Garcia-Spitz

CHICAGO — Angel Xavier Garcia-Spitz, age 39, passed away May 18, 2022, in Chicago.

Born on Feb. 18, 1983, Angel was named Benjamin Martin Garcia-Spitz; Benjamin after the last tribe of Israel, “Martin” after maternal grandfather, before changing to Angel Xavier.

Angel was self-employed, living in the Windy City, but for many years, lived and traveled the world in Mexico, Costa Rica, Europe, Mali, Africa and Southeast Asia. Angel spent most of the time teaching English as a second language in South Korea, Japan, China, India and Saudi Arabia. However, Angel left teaching to become the Head Instructor for CDI College in Daejeon, Korea from 2006 to 2008. To be closer to family, Angel returned to the states to continue work in education both as a teacher and coordinator.

Angel was born in Texas, and attended school in Harlingen (Coakley Middle School) and Mercedes (Science Academy of South Texas) but moved to Illinois with family in the sophomore year to attend and graduate from Harlem High School (District 122) in Machesney Park in 2001. Angel traveled the world before graduating from Antioch University, Yellow Springs, Ohio, with a degree in Music Composition in 2006.

Angel is survived by his parents, G.G. and Sheila Garcia (nee Spitz), of Amboy; and siblings, Ileana Marisela, of Elsa, Texas, Jorge-Luis Armstrong, of New York City, N.Y., Cristela Elizabeth, of San Diego, Calif., and Juan Carlos, of Chicago, all “Garcia-Spitz.”

Angel was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Rita Spitz, and paternal grandparents, Leonardo and Josephina Garcia.

There will be a funeral Mass for the family on June 28, at St. Patrick Church, in Amboy, followed by the internment of Angel’s cremains at Holy Cross Church, in Mendota. Angel’s friends and former classmates are having a Celebration of Life on social media and also at a live event in Chicago.
